Join MTNA and CAPMT now! (Online application) WHO WE ARE...California Association of Professional Music Teachers (CAPMT) is the California affiliate of Music Teachers National Association (MTNA), which was founded in 1876 and is America's oldest music professional association. Our membership includes concert artists, university, college and conservatory faculty, and independent music educators. MTNA membership for Californians is possible only through CAPMT; conversely, membership in CAPMT includes MTNA. Studio teachers, performers and educational institutions benefit from a national affiliation and perspective. National and division programs, interstate and intrastate legal information, representation in Washington, D.C., involvement in the Alliance for Arts Education and American Music Conference -- all create a powerful voice for music teachers and their special concerns. California is part of the MTNA Southwest Division, which also includes Nevada, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico and Hawaii. DISTRICTS AND CHAPTERS. California is divided into nine geographical districts, some of which are subdivided into chapters. The districts and chapters provide local opportunities for student performances, competitions and evaluations and for teacher enrichment, education and interaction. OUR PURPOSE..."The primary purpose of this corporation is to raise the standards of music education and to promote the art of music throughout the State by means of educational activities, which will heighten awareness and understanding of the art of music by students, teachers, and the general public, including State Conferences, District conferences, master classes, workshops, student evaluations and competitions, newsletter and scholarship opportunities."* *CAPMT Constitution, Art. II, Sec. 4 SOME OF OUR BENEFITS...PUBLICATIONS. The American Music Teacher is the official journal of the MTNA and is published bi-monthly. The CAPMT State Newsletter, the Communiqué, is published three times a year to inform members of State activities. CONFERENCES. State and national Conferences feature outstanding artists, performing repertoire from the standard literature to the most avant-garde. Lectures, demonstrations and discussions in the fields of performance practices, technique, theory, composition, pedagogy and musicology give a comprehensive overview of effective teaching ideas and applications. CERTIFICATION. National certification for teachers is a program sponsored by MTNA and is transferable to all 50 member states. The program promotes high professional standards and recognizes the need to maintain professional excellence by periodic renewal achieved through continuing education, experience, exposure and growth. INDEPENDENT MUSIC TEACHERS FORUM (IMTF). IMTF is concerned with promoting a professional image for the private studio teacher. Development of studio policies, assistance with tax and zoning problems, teaching strategies and solutions for challenges in the parent/ teacher/student relationship, are a few of the issues IMTF seeks to address.
