Piano Auditions and Ensemble/ Vocal Ensemble Auditions are non-competitive, welcoming programs designed to encourage and motivate students of all ages. For many teachers and students, this is their favorite event of the year! Repertoire is performed in an audition, recital, or festival setting, depending on the district/chapter. Students are given constructive comments, along with a rating from 1-5. Students receiving a "5" are invited, but not required, to perform at the CAPMT Northern or Southern Festivals, which will be virtual festival recitals for 2020.
After closely monitoring the impact of COVID-19, we are temporarily changing how to send audition submissions to meet social distancing guidelines. Due to our current situation, Piano Auditions, Ensemble Auditions, and Vocal Ensemble Auditions will be through a video submission process.
Students will record videos of their performances for judges to evaluate their music. Other rules are still in effect. Auditions repertoire lists are the same. Performance submissions can be done via links from platforms such as YouTube and Vimeo. Music scores for the judges will not be required this year.
We would like to encourage more performance of non-Classical music. Piano Auditions is a non-competitive program. All applicants will still be required to learn one solo according to the repertoire list. The second piece selection can be virtually anything. Therefore, we highly encourage the use of composer's music who hail from anywhere and everywhere: living composers, female composers, composers of color, improvisations, arrangements, movie scores, video game music, anime themes, jazz, and more.
Duets and concerti on the repertoire list are still being accepted for 2020, but performers who are not able to record a duet are permitted to record a non-memorized solo including but not limited to a female or BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) composer.
