CAPMT is committed to supporting the careers of California composers. The chosen recipient of the CAPMT 2020 Commission will write a new work to be premiered at the 2020 CAPMT State Conference (date and location TBA). The 2020 CAPMT Commission fund of $2000 is funded with the support of MTNA. The 2020 Commissioned Composer’s composition will be submitted to the MTNA national competition.
Current Commissioned ComposerRoman Baranskiy"I was blown away when I first heard Roman Baranskiy’s string quartet. In my opinion, for a composer to hold his or her own in the string quartet medium really sets them apart. And Roman does just that. I was struck by his intimate understanding of the quartet as instrument. It is written at a high degree of sophistication, harkening back to Ravel and Bartok in terms of the sheer craft and interplay of instruments. I was also struck by how musical the writing is. Roman’s orchestral writing shares the same wonderful trait: understanding and exploiting the orchestra as an instrument in a unique way. I am excited to hear the commissioned work AURA, for Flute, Vibraphone and Jazz Electric Guitar, which uses exciting undulating patterns as the instruments rise and fall in synchronous waves of sound and energy. I am thrilled that Roman will represent the State of California at the national level in the MTNA Distinguished Composer of the Year competition." ––Craig Richey, CAPMT Commissioned Composer Chair |
